21st Century Wood Badge is the advanced training program for all Scout leaders in the Boy Scouts of America. This includes all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity and Venturing leaders, as well as professional scouters. Wood Badge is designed to train adult volunteers using the latest leadership skills and techniques.
Wood Badge is divided into two parts, the Practical Phase and the Application Phase.
The Practical Phase in S-8-480-11-1 (WB 21-18) Fall 2011 will be covered over two 3-day weekends in the fall of 2011: September 9 – 11 & September 31 – October 2, 2011.
The Practical Phase in S-8-480-12-1 (WB 21-19) Spring 2012 will be covered over two 3-day weekends in the Spring of 2012: April 13 – 15 & May 4 – 6, 2012.

Completion of the Basic NRA Pistol Safety Class will allow a registered Venturing crew member to shoot hand guns at approved Venturing events. Powder Horn is filling up for 2011! Here’s your chance to help develop your high adventure program for 2011.
The Last Frontier Council is host to Powder Horn on April 14-17 and April 28 – May 1, 2011. Boy Scouting and Venturing leaders can take advantage of this terrific training opportunity to improve the resources you need to develop a high adventure program in your troop or crew.
This course has a curriculum that includes introductions to the necessary skills to oversee a high adventure program, and the certifications necessary (and how to obtain those certifications) including: Backpacking, Cave Exploring, Communication, Conservation, Cooking, COPE, Ecology, Emergency Preparedness, Equestrian, Expedition Planning, First Aid, Fishing, Hunting, Land Navigation, Leave No Trace, Life Saver, Mountaineering, Mountain Biking, Outdoor Living History, Physical Fitness, Plants & Wildlife, Scuba, Shooting Sports, Watercraft, Wilderness Survival and Working with Teens
The first half of the course will be located at the Diamond H Scout Ranch. The second half will be hosted at Slippery Falls Scout Ranch. Kirby Junge is the course director and a veteran of several Powder Horn courses.

Dr John Bowen, affiliated with Venturing Crew 77, would like to announce a high adventure rafting trip in Colorado for 2011. The trips will run on June 13-17 and July 11-15. This course teaches the same skills as the rafting Kodiak trip last summer but without the BSA leadership Kodiak component. The costs are lower for 2011. This is open for Venturers and older Scouts.

An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure when you are in the wilderness. Wilderness & Remote First Aid is an American Red Cross program that focuses on prevention of accidents as well as handling the unique first aid care skills necessary when help is more than an hour away. This training is required for future High Adventure base experiences like Philmont and highly recommended for at least one adult in every Scout Troop and Venturing Crew. Two courses are available in 2011
Course Date: February 12-13, 2011 or April 30 – May 1, 2011
Class times: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm each day
Location: Eagle Lodge, John Nichols Scout Ranch, located on SW 119th and Council Road.
Cost: $35.00 Includes class books and patch
Class Size: maximum: 20
Minimum Age: 14 years of age
Purpose: Learn skills needed to respond to an emergency respond to a situation that is more than 1 hour from EMS.
Bring to Class: Comfortable clothes for outdoors, raingear, lunch and water bottle, Backpack or duffel with gear you would use on a wilderness activity.

Climb on Safely Rappelling/Climbing training
April 1-2, 2011
Class times: Friday 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm, Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Bring your lunch)
Location: Eagle Lodge, John Nichols Scout Ranch, located on SW 119th and Council Road.
Cost: $20.00 (includes some supplies, tower use and BSA publication “Topping Out”)
Class Size: maximum of 15
Requirements: Registered with BSA, 18 years or older, and have some experience and basic knowledge of rappelling and climbing. 16 years or older can obtain a “Climbing Instructor in Training” card.
Purpose:Learn climbing/rappelling methods and techniques, and BSA requirements and recommendations to provide a safe high adventure program for your unit. Each unit needs a minimum of two trained Climbing Instructors, to conduct a climbing event.
Course Registration Deadline: Wednesday preceding the course date. Course may fill prior to this date. Call the LFC Service Center at 405-840-1114 to register.

Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet are scheduled for 3rd weekend of each October. This weekend will occur on the 15th (Friday) through the 16th (Saturday) for 2010.
JOTA is an amateur radio event connecting youth via HAM radio through volunteer amateur radio operators. JOTI connects via the internet with a chat room style of interaction.
These events are the easiest and most inexpensive way to participate in the worldwide fellowship of Scouting. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers participate with their fellow programs worldwide contacting sites that may be in the next state, the next country or on the other side of the world.
